Two sanctioned preparations: Cold Conjuration and Fridge Reserve.
Variation I — Cold Conjuration (Fast)
For immediate deployment. Clean, cold, and precise. No refrigerator steep required.
Ingredients (1 Glass)
- 12–16 oz plain sparkling water (very cold)
- ½ tsp vanilla loose tea, or 1 vanilla tea pod/sachet
- 3–5 anise seeds, lightly cracked
- Optional: tiny pinch of salt
- Optional: ½ tsp balsamic or apple cider vinegar (per glass)
Method
- Add cracked anise seeds into the vanilla tea pod or infuser.
- Steep in 2–3 tbsp hot (not aggressively boiling) water for 3–4 minutes.
- Remove pod and allow concentrate to cool 30–60 seconds.
- Pour concentrate into a glass and top slowly with cold sparkling water.
- Add vinegar only if desired, and only in the glass.
Control Note: If the drink tastes sharp or medicinal, reduce anise or steep time next round.
Root beer should be rounded, not loud.
Variation II — Fridge Reserve (Batch)
A cold-steep base designed for readiness. Carbonate only at the moment of service.
Ingredients (1 Liter Base)
- 1 liter cold filtered water
- 2 vanilla tea pods/sachets (or 2 tsp loose tea in an infuser)
- 8–12 anise seeds total, lightly cracked
- Optional: a few grains of salt
Method
- Add 4–6 cracked anise seeds into each vanilla tea pod.
- Place pods into cold water and refrigerate 12–18 hours.
- Taste at 12 hours; remove pods when aroma is balanced and root-forward.
- Store sealed in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
Serving
- Pour ¼–⅓ glass of Fridge Reserve base
- Top with cold sparkling water
- Stir once and serve immediately
Rule of the Lab: Never acidify the full batch.
Add balsamic or vinegar only at the glass to preserve stability.
